Before using mushrooms in cooking, make sure you know what types are out there, and how they are prepared.

The type of mushroom most commonly available to buy for cooking is the Agaricus Bisporus Mushroom, more commonly known as white mushrooms. These are either going to bought canned or fresh.

They have two different shapes, and can be used for many different things. The first type is the “button” shape, these are perfect for soups, casseroles and salads. They can be finely chopped or simply sliced. The second type is the large “open-cap” mushroom, the caps can be used for stuffing or you can slice them to use them in salads, soups, or stir-fry.

If you like to use mushrooms in cooking, it’s important to remember that you should cook mushrooms using low heat. Don’t over-cook mushrooms, as this makes them slimy or tough. And avoid using large amounts of liquid, as mushrooms typically have a high water content.

Chineses dried mushrooms have a woody, smoky taste- which is intensified by the drying process. These are seldom eaten fresh and are best used in soups, sauces or stir-fry dishes.

Straw mushrooms, named for growing in straw, have a musty flavor. They can be bought canned, although they taste better fresh. They must be drained and rinsed before being used in cooking.

Using Shitake mushrooms in cooking is a wonderful adventure for your tastebuds, but make sure to only buy fresh as needed. Refrigerating them will cause them to become “slimy.”

There are many different types of mushrooms out there, and many different ways to prepare them. Make sure to check before using wild mushrooms in cooking, there are many poisonous types out there. Otherwise, enjoy your taste adventure!
